Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip
By Lizelle Jackson | March 1, 2008

I have always been a huge fan of Monty Python, it is some of the funniest material I have ever seen. My high school band teacher once made us take a mid-term for marching band (yes I was on marching band) on Monty Python and The Holy Grail, so let’s just say I’m pretty well rehearsed with the film.

This may very well be the reason that I find Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip so interseting. Yeah their names are a little odd but the group is compromised of Dan le Sac on the beats and Scoobius Pip on the vocals, both of who each have their own solo acts as well. Their concept is pretty straightforward, organic hip-hop beats laced simple guitar licks and some synth pads. However, the kicker for me is the the delivery of the vocals, it’s like a combination of Saul Williams’ story telling blended with the cokneyed accent of Eric Idle. It’s like hearing an electro/hip-hop version of “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. They actually have something to say as well, just check out “Letter from God to Man” to see for yourself. They have got several shows lined up here in th US including SXSW and Coachella for those of you luky enough to be going!

I’ve seen Holy Grail at least 100 times. I can only imagine it with a rap soundtrack!

Monty Python falls into “timeless”. Timeless like The Beatles or the sun. I was born in ‘66 and it initially confused the hell out of me as my parents would laugh their asses off (a little help from Ma Nature) at these incredibly curious fellows on the box. I watched so many times however, that I can still repeat the lines w-f-w 30 years later as I lay back, smoke a fatty, and watch my Collector’s Edition… Now I have passed it on to my children.
