Quincy Jones petitions to appoint a Secretary of the Arts
By Lizelle Jackson | January 10, 2009
This has been landing in my inbox all day…
Of course we need this!
Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask President-Elect Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts. While many other countries have had Ministers of Art or Culture for centuries, The United States has never created such a position. We in the arts need this and the country needs the arts–now more than ever. Please take a moment to sign this important petition and then pass it on to your friends and colleagues.

I think this is a terrible idea. Anyone familiar with the restrictions that have come in the art world due to NEA funding would be against this! Artistic freedom means the government should stay out of it. The government has time and again dictated the fate of organizations through giving grants and taking them away when the art created was deemed unsuitable.
If you believe in artistic freedom, DON’T sign this petition!
