Swiss Miss, Stefanie Heinzmann
By Lizelle Jackson | May 15, 2008
Ok, so even though Stefanie Heinzmann is most likely one of those manufactured artists that was set into motion after the success of Amy Winehouse (ex. Duffy), she isn’t half bad, and she is Swiss!. At first listen the track started out very similar to that of The Roots rework of Cody Chestnutt’s “The Seed”, which is a great song. Taking advantage of the Motown style production that seems to be so poplular right now on the charts, Stefanie brings a pretty strong voice that I’m sure you didn’t see coming out of the librarianesque (minus the lip ring) teen. None the less, I just felt compelled to post her to show my friends in Switzerland (c’est pour toi Cynthia!) that there is music that exists there besides yodeling! ![]()

I love Polaroid
By Lizelle Jackson | May 13, 2008
I stumbled across this litte Parisien group called Polaroid some time ago and immediately fell in love with their relaxing acoustic music. “I Think I love you” sounds easily like it could have been on the Juno soundtrack, utilizing a ukulele and that male vs. female verse trade off that comes off more like fun childlike banter. On “Nervous Tic Motion to the Head” we get a nice folky tune with some beat boxing that makes for a nice little surprise. However, by far my favorite is a little bossa nova ditty “Jardin d’Hiver” (literally translated, Garden of Winter) that sounds like it would be used in some kind of sexy perfume commercial or Victoria Secret ad. Actually, I don’t like those descriptions, I feel like it kind of cheapens the song…just make sure you listen to it and see what you think.
Oh, and since we are on the subject of Juno, I looooove “I am a Vampire” by Antsy Pants….it’s not the whole song, but I like this video by FatHobbit1191.

Cupcake Coma
By Lizelle Jackson | May 11, 2008
Between the Cupcake Socaial 2.0 I attended on Thursday and my friend making me eat the extra cupcakes she made (yes, she made me eat them, I had no choice in the matter) I thought I wouldn’t be able to eat anymore cupcakes for quite sometime. Once again I underestimated myself when I passed a cute little shop called One Girl Cookies on Dean and Smith in Brooklyn, and had an excellent vanilla cupcake. So for this week I have decided to stay away from cupcakes…they are bad.

Rye Rye
By Lizelle Jackson | May 9, 2008
Even though she looks like she is about 12 years old…don’t let Rye Rye fool you, this Baltimore based protégé of M.I.A. packs a punch. I’m just mad she didn’t show up to last month’s Dante Fried Chicken party at Galapagos, becuase to be honest I don’t think I can handle trying to navigate through the sea of hipsters that will be at the M.I.A. concert at McCarren Park Pool (which Rye Rye will be opening at). In the meantime, I’ll just check out her video while I fail miserably at trying to learn that dance. ![]()

Sam Sparro covers Estelle’s “American Boy”
By Lizelle Jackson | May 1, 2008
Santogold and Sam Sparro are the albums I have been anticipating the most this year. Now with the release of Santogold’s self-titled album on Tuesday, I just have to wait for Mr. Sparro’s to drop here in the states. Not to worry though, I came across this video of him in the studio covering Estelle’s “American Boy” for the Radio 1 Live Lounge that will keep me tied over for awhile. In my mind he killed it…the arrangement is crazy catchy, with nothing but drums, bass, and a keyboard. Now compare his version to Estelle’s version, from the same Radio 1 Live Lounge, but it just isn’t cutting it for me. Maybe I’m biased since I don’t really care for her after some comments she made about Adele and Duffy, plus I just don’t think she has a great voice….but you be the judge. I wonder how long it will be before Estelle tires to say that Sam isn’t soulful enough or is not “her” music. In my opinion, judging from these two versions, Sam has more soul in his pinky finger than she will ever have.
Estelle’s version….
Sam the man….

Santogold at Virgin Records!!!!
By Lizelle Jackson | April 30, 2008
So Santogold’s album dropped yesterday, and you better believe I was at the Virgin Record Store at 9:30 in the morning making sure I got my my wristband to see her perform later that night! I’m not sure what kind of performance (or person) I was expecting, but I sure didn’t get it…and that is definitely not a bad thing. Judging by her music and pictures I was expecting someone that was really eccentric and outspoken, which I’m sure she probably can be. Instead yesterday, this cute, tiny, charming woman in black pants and a leotard is on stage almost in tears discussing how happy she is that her album was finally released. Overall it was a great performance and I absolutely love her CD!
There was one unscheduled visit during the meet and greet, when out of nowhere Lil’ Mama jumps in front of the line to take a picture with Santogold and then begins to walk down the line to shamelessly plug an upcoming performance of hers. Really? Some people have no shame…
Oh, and for all of those folks who keep trying to compare her to M.I.A. or keep calling her a copy…take a listen to the album and then back off. Santogold can stand on her own two feet.
Here is a crappy video I took of the performance…

Tawiah
By Lizelle Jackson | April 27, 2008
I have been really feeling this song “Broken Heart” by Tawiah for awhile now, but just haven’t gotten around to posting about it. One of my like minded musical junkie friends (yeah Kansky, I took your “verbage”) informed me of how much he liked the song as well, so I figured I better write about it. With slow crunchy drums and synths at the forefront of the song, you really can’t go wrong. For me though, it’s Tawiah’s smooth and soulful voice that keeps the song so fluid.

Rewind: Kid Cudi
By Lizelle Jackson | April 25, 2008
So it seems I made a mistake on my Kid Cudi post a couple days ago. That “Old Money Vocal Edit” was not actually an official Cudi remix, so I just want to put it out there that he had nothing to do with that. However though he does have a mixtape coming out, Plain Plat presents “A Kid Named Cudi: The Mixtape” which will be sponsored by 10 Deep Clothing and Fools Gold Records.
Wale will also be featured on “Is There Any Love”, the first single off the mixtape. Click here for some clips of him performing on the Fools Gold/Dim Mak tour.

Ladyhawke
By Lizelle Jackson | April 24, 2008
It’s such a beautiful day out today so I felt like a nice little dancy pop tune (is that actually a word?) from Ladyhawke. Haven’t listened to this in awhile but it just evokes that summer feel. Thanks to Pinglewood for the track.
